The Olympia exhibition center was buzzing with literary excitement during The London Book Fair 2026, held from March 10 to March 12. Amidst the incredible lineup at the Bookwrights House booth, author Mary Beth Allen captivated readers once again with her thrilling fantasy adventure, The City of Mystery.
A Magical Quest to Save Salston
The City of Mystery invites readers into a beautifully crafted fantasy world. The adventure kicks off when twelve-year-old Jill Bell receives a mysterious crystal bracelet as an inheritance from her grandfather. She soon discovers that this bracelet holds the keys to unlocking the legendary City of Mystery—a place her grandfather claimed held the answers to stopping the growing "Trouble" threatening her beloved home city of Salston.
Jill doesn't have to face the dangers alone. She is joined by an unforgettable cast of animal companions:
Peter, a brave male unicorn colt.
Pytor, a soaring golden eagle.
Zyon, a small purple family dragon who lends his unique expertise to their perilous mission.
Together, they must navigate dark forests, face giant poisonous scorpions, and seek out "Orion," the first speaking dragon, eagle, and unicorn recorded in the Blue Law.

A Foundation of Faith: First and foremost, Allen’s writing is deeply influenced by her Christian faith. The City of Mystery, along with her other titles like The Battle Cry for Freedom and Treason, are built on allegorical themes meant to share the story of Jesus Christ in a way that is highly entertaining, adventurous, and full of excitement.
Real-World Engineering & Empathy: Interestingly, Allen draws profound inspiration from her past career in engineering in a third-world country. Witnessing the difficult conditions and oppressive environments people lived in gave her a deep well of empathy. Furthermore, her interactions working closely with people—hearing their fears, their interests, and their stories—gave her the fresh insight needed to bring true emotional depth to her characters.
